10 Ways to Declutter Your Mind

Ten ideas to declutter your mind and get your brain thinking about something else:

  1. Purge or brain dump – Write a list as long as you need to get everything out of your head. Use pen and paper, or software (eg Evernote). Record it on your smart phone.
  2. Share the load with a friend or accountability buddy. Sometimes just by talking about it, you can hear what’s really going.
  3. Do something physical:
    Your favourite exercise – walk, run, jog, play tennis, dance.
    Go for a swim.
    Clean house or garden.
    Play with pets or children.
    Declutter something eg your inbox, your desk, an overfull drawer.
  4. Go outdoors and be with nature.
  5. Switch off with music, a good book, a movie, a favourite pastime or hobby.
  6. Meditate, think, journal, review.
  7. Do something totally unrelated to all the concerns of the mind.
  8. Finish a task thats been hanging over you for a while ie make a decision and take action to gain momentum and a sense of accomplishment.
  9. Automate a mundane task, or delegate it.
  10. Let go of the thoughts and worries that are distracting you.

I’m sure there are many more ways to declutter the mind. These are just meant to get you started.

As I look over this list I realise that different things work for me at different times. Sometimes I need to talk while other times I need to be away. A walk will do wonders at those times, or washing my car, or getting stuck into something that I’ve been putting off. Sometimes it’s a meditation (or several!) and other times I just need to list it all out and schedule it “ to see in front of me in a way that makes sense and not just a mish-mash of everything. Even something as mundane as chopping vegetables for dinner requires a different focus and can help clear my mind.

No matter the method if the end result is a decluttered and calm mind, that’s what’s important!
