After having been away for a week and feeling some overwhelm with all the new ideas and excitement it generated, I’ve realised that, of course, I can’t do everything until I declutter what’s going in my mind. Then the priorities re-order, the focus returns and the action starts.
Here are some of the things I’ve been learning this week:
Remembering what I need to do is up to me – the promises I make, the appointments I’ve scheduled in, the follow-up I want to do. Thank goodness for the many tools we have to help us with this task. I would be very lost without my phone and its many apps – actually that’s not entirely true. There’s still a big place for old fashioned pen and paper, calendars, planners and diaries.
What I focus on is also up to me – lack of time, too busy, not skilled enough, no energy are not helpful things to focus on. When I focus on my bigger picture the three most important tasks each day get done. When I clear my mind, and simplify what’s going on there, time seems to shift and things get done easily, with possibilities I could not even consider with my cluttered mind.
Putting myself first is the best thing I can do. I’m not talking about being selfish; I’m talking about taking care of me and managing my own well-being so that I can be more present in the world and with every interaction I have. In my last blog, I talked about personal routines and it’s been a good reminder for me to clear my mind with meditation and walking, with healthy eating choices, filling my heart with laughter and joy, by saying no or asking for help.
Decluttering the mind is one of the best things I can do for myself. The clarity and focus that follows make a huge difference to how my day, and my life, unfolds.
