Life coaching is a profession that had its start as management coaching in the 1990s. It has evolved and developed since then and has much broader applications than its original management coaching outcomes.

•       It is a respectable and legitimate profession with an international body that sets and maintains the standards of the profession.

•       There are training programs that develop the coaching skills for both yours and your clients’ success.

•       There is an accreditation process that includes continuing professional development.

The accreditation process includes formal study and training, understanding of the professional ethics and standards of coaching, actual client coaching hours (both paid and pro-bono) and a knowledge test. Additional study and coaching hours lead to further accreditation.

·         As well as the ICF there are other accreditations offered by various other coaching bodies and private training organisations.

·         The nature of life coaching is that personal and professional growth are not just necessary they an integral and ongoing process that a life coach seeks out for themselves. Course undertakings are not limited to “accredited” programs. The path to accreditation is just one way to personal growth.

·         Success with your coach is based on the relationship you have with your coach. If results are the requirement for you and your coach works for you, that’s what’s important. If accreditation is a requirement for you, ask your coach about theirs.
