Holidays – For Your Health and For Your Heart

This week during a coaching session I saw the soul’s yearning to return to more carefree times, to reconnect with family, for love and laughter, to be looked after and cared for, even if just for a short while. She and her husband had been discussing the options for family visiting or visiting family. When she tapped into what was true for her she had her answer and they are now making holiday plans to visit family.

holidays

As a house sitter, my travel adventures are tempered by my clients’ calendars and the responsibilities of my duties. While it may seem like I live a life of permanent holiday that’s only partly true.  An Oxford dictionary definition of a holiday is “an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home or in traveling” misses what it is for me – a break from routine and responsibility, a time to refresh, recharge and see my world with new eyes.

Watching my client I recognized I’ve been putting aside the idea of a holiday. The excuses ranged from “I’m okay”, to “I don’t need it”, “everything’s fine just as it is”, and my version of the classic “I will when….”. I saw my own yearning to take a break from responsibility, from constantly doing what has to be done, from working around others’ needs.

My overseas travel bug has long been buried by fears around what might happen. A random and surprise invitation have allowed me to voice the fears and see solutions I’d previously not considered. From thinking I don’t need it, to realizing I want it – I am excited about my next holiday, the first in a long while.

This month I celebrate three years as a full-time house sitter. My travel bug has been filled with my house sitting adventures and by traveling vicariously through my house sitting clients. I’m still enjoying the lifestyle and I intend to continue but I have missed something – a real holiday from responsibility and duty. With the decision made I’m feeling a whole lot lighter and excited about life again! I’m not going for a while yet and I’m already feeling the benefits of a holiday!
