This week I’ve been working with a client who has taken the opportunity to use her recovery time to sort out her husband’s office. She does this every year!
Part of the de-clutter process is maintenance and routine clean outs.
Spring clean. There is a natural energy with this activity and spring is not the only time to do it! It might be at tax time when all the paperwork can be archived. Christmas and New Year, with visitors coming or holidays to enjoy, are great times. Back to school, a new phase in life or a busy time is coming up – any of these are potentially great times for a spring clean. Spring clean when it works for you.
Define the space. Home offices tend to get cluttered. The boundaries between work and home get blurred. Personal bills get mixed up with business ones, the kids come in and take over the office computer and things go missing and no-one seems to know anything about it. Separate the two areas and make it so clear nothing gets mixed up. Here is work and there is personal.
Define the time. With two separate physical areas, it is easier to focus on the task at hand. Work during work hours (whatever that may be in your case) and family and personal tasks can be dealt with separately at another time.
Maintenance – why make it a chore? Once you set up systems that work for you putting things away, straight away signifies job done, mess gone and then what’s next can be a whole other fun question!
I expect my client’s husband will work easier now, he won’t avoid his office as much and he’ll get more done. It’s a much easier space to be in now and changes have been made around the office computer and how it’s used by everyone who uses it. I wouldn’t be surprised either if the family business is done differently from here on.
