Whether by circumstance or by choice, when we go from one place in life to the next, we inevitably go through a period of being uncomfortable in both. This can happen even in positive life events such as a promotion, going from employee to business owner, from single to a couple (or even from a couple to single), parent to empty nester. There is an adjustment period where we must make the mental and physical changes necessary for success in the next stage.
Recently I caught up with a client who is now a healthier, happier, more glowing version of the person I first met. Her eyes are sparkling and curious and she has a peaceful and calm energy about her. When I complimented her with my observations she was stunned. It seems she’d been mentally berating herself because she’s not been exercising and was feeling like a blob as a result. Her whole demeanour changed as she began to see herself with new eyes.
How often do we continue defining ourselves as we once were, and not as we are now? A mental shift can be as simple as “I am ….. (fill in the blank with the new title)”. It’s not about faking it till you make, it’s about defining yourself as you intend to be. As you take the more empowered actions the physical changes can’t help but follow. In the case of my client exercise may have been the initial start of her success but subsequent and continuing behaviours had carried her so much further.
No matter what stage of life you’re in, or the transition you’re making, any time is a good time to define yourself as the CEO of your life.
