Mental well being – it’s part of your health plan

When I was in high school our physical education teacher mocked us for wanting to learn more about mental health. While the conversations now are much more open, dealing with the issues on a personal level are still just as challenging.

According to the World Health Organization mental health is

  • “a state of well-being in which
  • every individual realises his or her own potential,
  • can cope with the normal stresses of life,
  • can work productively and fruitfully, and
  • is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

I like that the focus is on wellness and not merely the absence of a mental health condition.

Over the last few weeks I’ve talked about health in the physical sense and mental health is an important factor in that. It is no coincidence that many of the tips for our physical health are the same tips recommended for our mental health.

  • Supporting healthy habits:
  • Physical activity & hobbies
  • Healthy eating
  • Social activity & healthy relationships
  • Good sleep habits

In Australia, it’s estimated that 45 per cent of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. In any one year, around 1 million Australian adults have depression, and over 2 million have anxiety. I am no stranger to the world of depression and I am grateful to have had support as I worked through it. I now recognise the symptoms and my behaviour before it takes hold. As a life coach I am not trained to offer counselling services, nor do I. As a human being I have been there & come back. Reach out if you need support – you are not alone, nor do you need to be.

There is much online information to find out more eg. www.beyondblue.org.au. There are people who can help you anonymously eg. www.lifeline.org.au. You may have supportive and non-judgemental friends or perhaps you require practical help. Seek help from your medical practitioner who can refer you for further counselling if you need more.

If you’re feeling stuck that’s where I can help. Contact me or book a session to find out how partnering with a life coach can help you move forward & create what you want in your life.
