Google “time management” and you’ll find an abundance of articles, hints, tips and systems that you MUST use to get more done in less time or what your morning routine should look like. I’ve finally figured out I don’t have to do any or all of these. What I can do pull out some different things and put together something that works for me.
My best mornings include:
- Waking up feeling rested: I’ve resisted the alarm clock. To me it’s a rude awakening; rather than easing me gently into my day it seemed an intrusion that started it off with a less than happy attitude. Thanks to finding a radio station with gentle music and conversation I am waking earlier and there’s no pressure to “get up NOW”.
- Meditation – Ten minute meditations have made a big difference to managing my energy throughout the day. I use meditation to start my day from a place of calm, to refocus in between activities, to relieve the back pain that comes up when I’m stressed and to quiet the doubts that come up when I feel the pressure of what I’m trying to accomplish.
- Making my bed first thing. Yes, I resisted this. I was too busy, it could wait. But – when the bed is made one room of the house is tidy and welcoming. The groan in my head of “I still have to do that” is no longer there. It’s done and I feel like I’ve accomplished something. My day has started.
- Journalling – Morning pages have helped for some time (check out The Artist’s Way). I’m now on board with Five Minute Journalling which not only starts my day with focus, it ends my day with gratitude.
- Planning ahead (I wonder if this should actually come before waking up rested?) – It’s not just about scheduling in what I have to do & where I have to be, it’s about being prepared before I get there and leaving in plenty of time to arrive on time.
I’m a quality time person. I don’t do well multi-tasking so when I have a few things on my plate the first place I look at is what’s happening with my time and what I can do to make it less stressful. These activities make busy days less stressful, more productive and all without the pressure of having to achieve.
