Resistance is Futile Part 2 – Procrastination & solutions

Last week  I listed some of the ways procrastination shows up in my life.   This week I look at some of  the reasons/excuses/justifications and at least one possible solution for each because of course there are always  more solutions than we first think!

  • It’s too hard – I’m daunted by the task, it seems a really big job. Start with a first really simple step, get some confidence and momentum and the task becomes achievable one step at a time.
  • I don’t know how to do it – I’m not confident that I have the skills. Start, and when I get stuck I ask, I learn, I try. Most times I even end up surprising myself!
  • What if I fail? – Or if it fails then I’m a failure. The truth is if it fails then it didn’t work. Taking another approach could be the answer.
  • It has to be perfect – my favourite! Constant tweaking and refining won’t get it out there. Getting some feedback is a good reality check. Learn to accept that good enough really is good enough!
  • There are urgent matters to be attended to – Sometimes things really do have to be done – get them done as quickly and completely as possible. This often means re-prioritise the list and when the crisis has been dealt with continue to on with the important things.
  • I might upset someone if I do that a – or that’s not how it’s usually done and I have another idea. For me it’s about being courageous and taking action outside of my comfort zone. It is possible they won’t like it. It’s also possible they might just have been waiting for me to do this and shine!
  • I’m so disorganised – or I can’t find what I need when I need it. It sounds obvious to say sort it out and, yes, initially it will take some time but ultimately a lot of time will be saved. (PS I personally know The Declutter Coach and she would love to help you! PPS I am The Declutter Coach – contact me for a chat and professional help with getting sorted.)
  • You may like to include your favourite reason here.

Next week I look at the hidden costs of procrastination.
