I love how my iPhone calendar keeps me on track with all my appointments! What I didn’t know is that I can set up an iPhone calendar to keep track of my regular payments as well!
In a previous life, our family business began as a one-man bobcat operator and grew into a construction company employing staff, paying wages and taxes, BAS/GST and super. Given this was all backed by the family home mortgage there was quite a period when I freaked out about “was there enough money to pay the wages this week?” This set me on a path to simplify what I did to give me peace of mind and to sleep again at night.
A budget’s a good place to start but in the space of what’s urgent (staff need their wages tomorrow) versus what’s important (the budget) I needed something NOW! I’m a list person and a visual one as well so for me listing it all down – what, when, how much – and putting it all down in a calendar really helps me see it all clearly, at a glance and in advance. So that’s the money going out.
Is there enough money to pay the bills this week? Online banking makes life really easy. Reconciling the bank account well before payday (yep, I’m an accountant – this can be a quick and painless task especially with the software that’s available) provides certainty around what’s needed and provides options too on what can be done to make sure it’s there well before time. And that’s the money coming in.
We have so many tools available to us in 2015! Online this, mobile that, easy access to anything we need! My iPhone is my everything and now I’m using it to give me clarity and peace of mind around my finances. I know there are apps I can use but as I usually don’t fit in the boxes for which they’re designed I’m not getting all the information I need. What works for me is the visual perspective; it’s obvious and transparent and it gives me certainty. A budget now is not nearly so daunting!
