Do you ever look at how far you’ve come? Or are you so focused on what you haven’t done yet that you can’t even see how far you’ve come?
Far too often I’m guilty of not seeing the good things I’ve done and when I’m in that frame of mind I see only the mistakes I’ve made and, in that frame of mind the mistakes are always big ones.
The reality is my expectations of myself are pretty high. I tend to go over and above, getting the detail right and giving way too much. I think more is expected of me and I keep going until I’m totally exhausted or totally peed off wondering “what else do you want from me?”
I now surround myself with people who care enough to tell me when I’m being too harsh on myself. They reflect back to me all I’m doing and all I’ve done. They reflect back to me where I’ve come from, where I was and the changes I’ve made, that life really is very different now than it was.
I could not have come this far without the support of many people – friends, family, teachers, and the coaches I’ve had who’ve held me to my highest and helped me go there. It’s when I meet new people who’ve not met me before and don’t know where I’ve come from that I hear a whole new perspective. With the support of those who care and from the comments that come from new eyes I really can see how far I have come. From there I can take the next steps towards what I’ve yet to do.
