Have you considered the role of spirituality in your overall health? To me spirituality is a very deep and personal value, one I don’t often feel the need to share. Its meaning in my life is sacred and I wouldn’t be who I am without it. I know this because for a long time I was lost, drifting, unsure of the reasons my life was like it was.
Some definitions that have served me include:
- We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (and I thought this was a Wayne Dyer quote!)
- Spirituality – the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. (This from a google search & I can’t find the source.)
- a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves https://au.reachout.com/articles/what-is-spirituality
Even if you’re a religious/spiritual sceptic the benefits to health and wellbeing from a sense of peace include:
- Better health & health choices
- Increased immune system
- Emotional wellbeing & resilience
- Greater connection to self & your part in the world
- Connection to others via community
- Healing both physically & in other ways eg through forgiveness
Growing up I had very little religious learning and what I did learn didn’t make sense to me. I have friends who are greatly supported by their faith, whatever that faith may be, and they emanate a distinct sense of peace. In seeking a meaning for my life it is this sense of peace I was looking for. When I did find it, it was through an alternative practice and I have to say it was a religious experience. The changes from there have been profound and I am grateful for the teachings that showed the way for me.
