The blurring of lines between what’s home and what’s office is a great starting point for spring cleaning your home office.
Why?
• Bring life, peace and order to your office space.
• Make it an inviting space that encourages focused attention and productivity.
• Find what you need when you need it.
• You’ll be more productive and you can be out of there faster!
How?
• Desk – Sort all the stuff on top, take it all off – toss it (have the recycle bin ready), keep it (sort it & file it away later), act on it (start a do to do file). Clean it. Keep only what you need on your desk and by now there shouldn’t be much left to put on it.
• Drawers – Tip them out – sort the stuff – toss it (anything that doesn’t work anymore/is past due and finished), keep it – group these into like things – how many do you need? One plus a spare? One in every colour! Clean the drawers. Get some drawer organisers and use them to replace what you need to have on hand but don’t need to have on your desk.
• Filing cabinets – Keep contracts, leases etc where you can easily find them. Pack away last year’s paperwork in boxes or containers. Make sure they’re clearly labelled.
• Bookshelves – remove the books – us the toss it, keep it, act on it principle here too. Clean the bookshelf, dust the books and replace them.
• Clean your computer – the physical computer, sort cables – toss it (if you don’t know what it’s for, just toss it), keep it (label them), act on it (bundle them together out of sight and out of the way of legs, feet, furniture, equipment). Clean it, wipe cables down and clean the keyboard (with compressed air or sticky note papers between the keys). Set it up for ergonomic health and ease of working.
• Cleaning your computer files and email is another area all together. Use the same principle – toss it (use the delete button), keep it (file it away – use a filing system that helps you find it when you need it), act on it (respond, reply, follow up, complete). There has to be a separate blog on this topic, surely!
• Plants – great for oxygen, colour and life – but they do get dusty. Wipe down with a wet cloth, remove any dead bits, give them some water.
• Floors – under the desk, behind it, the whole room. (If you’re really keen, look up and start from the top.)
• Regular maintenance – job complete, end of day pack up, end of week wrap up.
