Where you live and work, your stress levels and who you surround yourself with can all make a difference to your well being.
- Home – are you surrounded by things that bring you joy? Yes, I am a fan of the Kon Mari method! Thoroughly enjoying your home space means you can relax, entertain, create, and play as you like. Set up your home, or at least a space in it, to enjoy these pleasures. The man shed, the sewing room, the entertainment centre – these are spaces set aside for those activities you love. By the way – “home” is a space you define, so even if it’s not your home you can still define it as such.
- Work – do you have everything you need to do your best work? By this I mean the equipment and processes you use eg furniture and positioning, efficient and relevant processes, noise and activity, adequate breaks, a supportive team, realistic timeframes.
- Are you able to switch off? Or are you on-call 24/7? We all need downtime, recovery time, play time. Living with high stress levels for an extended amount of time can lead to burn out and health issues. Too little stress as well as too much stress can affect your well being. Boredom is inspiration dried up. Too much to do can be overwhelming. Getting the balance right can include time boundaries, relaxation activities, turning off phone, email and social media.
- Manageable stress levels – What activities do you do just for you just because you love doing them? Activities that take you out of your day to day world into another one might include reading, movies, playing an instrument, painting, volunteering for a cause that means something to you. Make the time and make sure others know this is your time. Everyone will benefit from the change that you come home with. These activities may also have other benefits eg new career directions that can make life more interesting.
- Toxic relationships are a killer to your well being. Whether it’s a partner, a friend, a co-worker or a boss/client if you’ve tried everything and you’re not bringing out the best in each other it’s time to move on.
How your environment impacts you can be subtle. All may appear to be normal but if normal doesn’t work for you then change it. Honour what you need and make the changes to your environment to bring out your best.
