My Home is Generally Clean and Tidy

As a housesitter I can’t often tick the boxes that apply to most people. I don’t live in my own home and things are not always as I would have them. There are some things though that are not negotiable to me and this helps me decide whether to take on a particular housesit or not.

Living in a clean and tidy space is one of those non-negotiables.

  • Packing my suitcase so it doubles as my wardrobe space. Pets show their love by sleeping on their owner’s clothes and not all my housesit assignments offer me a place to put my clothes away. IKEA products have been a godsend to help me keep my clothes clean and tidy.
  • Staying within a confined space – as a single person I don’t need every room in the house. Yes, I like space but spreading to every room in the house really just means a lot more cleaning.
  • Some tips I’ve learned:

A clean sink and clean floors go a long way to a clean and tidy home.
Small tasks can get done while the kettle is boiling – empty the dishwasher, take the garbage out, wipe down the counters, get a load of washing going.
Start the day with a clean kitchen; it becomes an easy thing to go to bed with the dishes put away.

  • Moving as often as I do means I’ve learned to live with less. This includes food in the fridge and my makeshift pantry. This is something I’ve just realized as the instructions for feeding my charges include using up any leftovers – a rare occurrence for me especially as I love to create new from very little!.
  • Reduce the paper clutter and use online processes instead.

There have been homes that have needed a good clean and that suits me. I find the process therapeutic and the results are worth it. Maybe I’m weird, but it works for me. While I can’t redecorate a home that’s not mine I can maintain a clean and tidy environment.
