Dreaming Big – It’s What, not how!

Dreaming big doesn’t come easily to me. It is filled with the sound of judgemental voices –

  • Well, that’s never going to happen!
  • You can’t do that!
  • Don’t be ridiculous!
  • How are you going to do that?
  • All with the chorus of – who do you think you are?

And so I keep my dreams to myself and work quietly or give up without anyone being the wiser that I’d tried and failed.

One experience that totally proved me wrong was my dream to live in my own home on a large property, complete with pool and gardens, enjoying visitors and entertaining. To live in such luxury would require time and money and I had neither. Sure, I had my accounting qualifications – I would just have to get the corporate suit and go to a corporate job ie a daily commute to the city of 2-3 hrs return (and yes, I know, thousands do it) and a boring role. I’d need to pay a gardener and a pool cleaner and there would go my corporate earnings. I was uninspired. There was no way this dream was going to come together.

The ad in the local paper was for a garden flat, on acreage, miles from anywhere for $110/week. I met the owner; he was a tradie, and his business was building rural fences. The “home” on offer was a converted double garage, across from it was a road that divided the block and was the entry to the pool. The vegetable garden was at least 2 acres. There were beautiful gardens around m e. The owner lived in the large house just nearby. This did not fit the picture of my dream and I dismissed it.

At 2am I woke “of course this is my dream; it just looks different to how I’d imagined it.”

I lived there for 3 years. It was my little sanctuary. I entertained and invited guests and had weekend visitors. The owner lived close by but was far enough away that we had our own space.  As it turned out he loved gardening and he was the pool cleaner too! Everything I’d dreamed was there – all for $110/week.

Dreaming big is one thing. How it will happen is just another block to creating it. If you’re worried about how it can happen you will stop dreaming it. Focus on what you want. When you focus on what you want the how will come together.
