I seem to be surrounded by this phrase at the moment. I understand the exhaustion and the singular focus that comes with these words when all efforts are being made and results are less than expected or hoped for. I figure that seeing as I’m hearing this at the moment I’m probably going through it myself.
I’ve experienced this before – when I was a full-time mum and that’s all I did, when study took over my social life, when my job or the business I was in took over everything. At each of these times it seemed life was not fun anymore & I was not great to around either. I was missing out on things I enjoyed doing. I didn’t see my friends or do the things I loved. I was all too serious about everything. It seemed life was passing me by, I was resentful and I was full of regrets. When I get to this point I know it’s time for something to change.
Here’s what I do to get things going:
- I acknowledge I have a life and that I’m not enjoying it.
- I reconnect with old friends & activities I love and have missed. I start with what’s worked for me before eg exercise (the natural endorphin), friends whose company I love, and creative pursuits.
- I look for other activities, generally fun ones (but not only, sometimes it’s about finding new challenges) to incorporate into my life.
- I schedule them into my calendar and re-schedule other things so I commit to them.
Here’s what happens when I get things going:
- I empower myself to take charge of my life and live it more fully.
- I laugh more, I share others’ journeys, I remember I’m loved and it’s not all about me.
- I broaden my horizons, I challenge myself, I learn new skills, and I make new connections.
- I manage my time better.
In short, life becomes better with a balance of work and play. I am happier and involved in more of life. I am more appreciative of what I have and I am more interesting company. “I need a life” becomes “I have a life and I’m loving it!”
