Resistance is Futile

This week I begin a series of blogs on procrastination. Yes, I’m late getting it out – I was procrastinating!

Procrastination
A dictionary definition – the avoidance of doing a task which needs to be done – postponing until tomorrow what can be done today. (Have you noticed that you never procrastinate on the fun things you really want to do!)

And some of the ways it shows up for me:

  • Doing everything BUT what I know I have to do
  • Re-doing what I’ve already done to get ready to do what I know I have to do
  • Tidying up those “last few loose ends” before starting
  • Needing food/drink/toilet break – think toddlers at bedtime, they know they have to and they don’t want to
  • Focusing on the unimportant items – my desk in order, all my tools are there, the fancy cover sheet is ready
  • Phone calls to friends, confirming appointments and details of upcoming events
  • Getting enrolled in someone else’s drama, or inflaming one of my own
  • Social media distractions
  • You may include your particular favourite procrastinating technique here

When it’s time to take action and you’re not, it’s likely that procrastination is at play. Next week, I will talk about some of the reasons for procrastinating.
