What You Resist, Persists

I can’t believe I forgot today is the day I share what I’ve been learning! The day got taken up with lots of juggling to fit everything in and in the background I’m putting my health higher up the priority list – all in all a day of distractions!

This week I was given the opportunity to give feedback at work. Interestingly, what I got back was some tips on how to better work in the team, and no, she hadn’t read my blog from last week! As she talked, compassionately and constructively, I learned not only how I can appear to others but also what I can do differently, to connect more, to be more open to receiving help and also to asking for it. In the middle of it all my head kicked in with defensive answers – the “yeah, but” the resistance and finally the funniest acknowledgment that I’ve recognised for a while. “If you think I’m bad now, you should have seen me before!” – as if that counted for anything!

What I realised is that I don’t have to respond at all! I don’t have to do it the way I’ve always done it. I had been given the gift of awareness and it was up to me to take on board some of the suggestions and take the appropriate actions. Resistance really is futile! I left there yesterday after some gentle tormenting from my colleagues, some laughter at myself and a great feeling of connection that made work fun! I had forgotten it could be like that.

What I continue to create in my life is a sense of family. There is a common wish to understand and make changes that help each other through life’s journeys, whatever that may be. To live and work in environments that come from a genuine desire for the success of all is so very different to the fear-based environments I had thought were normal. I’m so glad I’ve finally passed that stage! With some positive experiences behind me, the others are fading away. In its place is the sense of excitement that comes from creating something new and different – this is what’s more real in my life now!
