Start with the first step

2019 has just begun. Your vision for the year may be so big and daunting that you can’t possibly imagine getting there. Hesitating at this point will put all your plans into jeopardy. Without that first step there will be no others and your vision will not see the light of day, let alone be something you can celebrate.

The first step does not have to be the biggest step, although it may feel like it. Others may tell you it’s easy and you have nothing to worry about and after you’ve done it you may think that too. Small comfort when you’re starting out.

And so, to start:

  • Have a plan.
    • Include the milestones
  • If you’ve not done this before and don’t even know what the plan needs
    • Ask someone to help you with it.
  • Break the steps down into smaller ones
    • And even smaller ones after that.
  • Start with the step that has the most energy for you
    • This is likely the one you feel most confident with.
  • Remember the adage “If it first you don’t succeed,
    • Regroup (ie remember the outcome you’re after), make adjustments and try again.”
  • Acknowledge your success
    • Yes, every step you take is a success.
  • Use this momentum of success to take the next step.

Bringing your vision to life requires you to take some action. It takes the first step and it takes all the steps it needs to get you there. Along the way is where you learn and gain confidence. Your smallest steps may be your biggest challenges. Be brave and step forward confidently. Keep moving, even if that movement is stopping to check in with the next step. Be prepared to change your original plan. Note: this is not permission to give up on your ultimate vision if it seems too hard. Call in reinforcements when you need them. Celebrate along the way and celebrate even more when you arrive.
