Teamwork

This week I’m learning about teamwork. I’ve heard the words and thought I was, but maybe I wasn’t.

My part-time role is showing me what an important part we all play in the machinery that is really the creative playground of someone’s crazy dream. Working for someone who so willingly shares his passion, and supports everyone else’s as well, is something I didn’t believe was possible.

An example – Last week I really stretched myself. I worked above and beyond to finish off some reports for one of the partners who comes in but once a fortnight and takes all reports with him. I was challenged by the time frame, the complexity of the task (ie not the usual basic reports) and the physical discomfort of pushing myself to get the job done and provide the service that was requested. After returning from lunch (and a  mini-meltdown) the boss, without looking up, told me there was something on my desk for me. He’d printed out an email he’d received about my great work that morning. Unexpected rewards are the best!

Knowing someone else’s passion or what they need is a big picture the whole team can work to. It’s not about what I’ve done or how I should be acknowledged for my part in it. It’s about everyone getting in and doing what they do best to create something bigger and grander than any one of us can do on our own. Knowing that makes it a focus that holds us all together.

I’m getting the feel of this teamwork thing and I like it! It’s an honour to help someone else’s dream come to life. To work together to a common end and in the doing of it get the chance to grow, to be challenged and to be stretched. I’m seeing how doing my best, and sharing the acknowledgement and the appreciation around is such a natural part of this process. I’m so glad to be having this real life experience of how teamwork can work (and work functionally) out there in the world! Maybe it won’t be long before I start accepting the offers of help or even asking for it myself when the going gets tough!
