10 Ways to Treat Yourself

This week I’ve been hearing from clients that something they want to do is also something that has to be done. How then how do you separate the two experiences?

The answer is to treat the activity like a treat.

Routine chores were the examples I heard.

1.       Doing the housework, cleaning, scrubbing, sorting can be a much-resented chore or it can be a meditative and therapeutic process.

2.       Painting a room when it has to be done can be a horrid chore or a beautiful creative process and the start of a new room.

3.       Balancing the books can be something dreaded or it can be for peace of mind and clarity and what’s not to feel good about that?

Something to remember is it’s each to his/her own. If it’s something that gives you a chance to tune out from the daily stress and you feel clear at the end of it then it’s a perfect treat for you, no matter what others may say. Examples that come to mind are physical activities:

4.       Jogging, swimming, training for an event.

5.       Yoga, Pilates.

6.       Camping, trekking, horse riding.

Perfect for some, not even on the radar for others!

Perhaps your treat is more for your mind:

7.       Study and research

8.       A new language or skill

9.       Philosophical discussion with other like-minded people.

Again, it’s what You want. Some will wonder why. Let them. Enjoy being with the others who are involved in your activity. They get it!

And the last of my strange ideas of 10 ways to treat yourself?

10.   Be of service to others – volunteer for a cause that means something to you.

If you were hoping for the usual things like pampering massages, outings with friends, a movie, a walk in nature or the beach – those are there for you, too. My point is to remind you to treat yourself in a way that works for you. Put the guilt away and do it – even if it’s something that has to be done – and notice the benefits that come from taking the time out to treat yourself.
