5 Ways to Simplify Your Life

First up, I’m going to make a couple of assumptions:

  • That you are doing what you love or
  • If there are things that just have to be done

Life can get busy and complicated.   Here are five ways to simplify your life:

  1. Start with the end in mind.   What is it you are aiming to achieve?   When you know your end result, the decisions you need to make become no-brainers and the actions you take are the ones you know you need to take to get there.
  2. Start from where you are.   What’s in the way and stopping you from getting where you want to go?   Now’s the time to see it, sort it and set yourself up for success!
Dump it – “Do you need it?”   If not, then get rid of it.   If you do need it, then make a home for it close to hand and easily accessible.   If you need to store it make it easy to identify for those rare time you just might need it or for when it’s time to dump it.
Delegate it – “Do YOU need to do it?” If not, then outsource it to someone who would love to do it.   It’s the end result you want; you don’t have to do it all.   If it is you who needs to do it, then put it aside to do it.
Do it – Prioritise it and diarise it with a time frame that gets it done quickly, freeing you up for the other good stuff life has on offer.
  3. Focus on the important things.   Focus on the 20% that matter, the things that will bring you the biggest return on your time investment.   Be aware of when your doing the fun things, or the easy things, and re-focus back on the important things.   Remembering your end result will help you past any  procrastination.
  4. Do one thing at a time.   Finish it, pack it up and celebrate it.   You’ll be surprised how much you can get done when you focus on one thing and clear the space to focus on the next thing.
  5. Learn to say “no” to those requests that take you away from what is important.   My favourite at the moment is the unsubscribe button.   All those emails might help me one day but right now, they are not.

When you simplify your life you’ll find there’s more of you left at the end of the day to do the things you really want to do in life.   Who knows?   When you simplify your life you might even find that the end of the day comes earlier!
