The Mandala

Last weekend I got the chance to be involved in creating my own mandala. The reason: a good friend’s birthday; the people: a group of friends and the theme: what this year will be about – a mini vision board if you will.

What a lovely afternoon we had! Each creation was different, each very special and each very unique. For me this will be a year long reminder keeping my focus on track and moving forward. I learned about mandalas a few years ago – it wasn’t just the name of the local psychiatric unit after all!

A mandala is from the Sanskrit language and means circle – it represents wholeness, a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relationship to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds. I learned about mandalas from a friend who gave me a couple of books worth of them. Not being a natural artist I bought myself some colouring pencils and began. It turned out to be a great way for me to meditate, to look inward, to heal emotionally and to look outwards once more with peace and a sense of centre. There is definitely a sense of wholeness that comes from a mandala. If you’ve not coloured one in, or made one for yourself – try it! Allow that inner child out to play with pencils, paints, textas or whatever works for you. (For more information on mandalas check out The Mandala Project.

A vision board works for me. It’s a way of planning, of getting clarity and of visualizing the outcome that I want. It includes the special people in my life and the things that nourish and support me, what I have and what I want. By doing it in an afternoon of friendship I also have the association of a great time and creating the year ahead now has this special memory with it as well. With the associations I have now both with mandalas and with the friendship this one was created with I have plenty of reasons to make this year all that I want it to be.
