My Car: Decluttering 2013 in Action

Cleaning my car on New Year’s Eve gave me so much more than just a clean and shiny car! It was a physical declutter process that helped me reflect on 2013, sort my head out and re-focus on 2014. It wasn’t until I’d done this physically with my car that my year landed and I could move on to 2014.

As I vacuumed, Armor-alled, washed and chamoised I reflected. Until July, I had little need for my car. My part-time job was only three minutes walk away, my coaching clients are coached by phone or Skype and the classes I took were via webinars. For a short time, it became a lawn mowing business transport vehicle (you’d be surprised what fits into a Mazda 323!).

My car took me to networking and social events, Toastmasters awards events, and visits to family and friends.   It  has taken me faithfully to clients for coaching services and for bookkeeping services. My rental property received some love and attention  and this  paid off with new tenants.

My car is showing signs of wear and tear and there’s some minor damage; her perfection is being spoiled as she ages and continues to be involved in life. She has weathered well; she rides smoothly, is well maintained and is still very reliable. I have let go of the need to have something new, just because I want something new. She is very presentable and will take me where I want to go easily and with style and comfort.

I know I’m a neat freak, I like order and structure, and I like things to be easy. That’s the end result. The process to this end result is also something I like and enjoy. At the end of the day I’d had a great physical workout (and sunshine and fresh air), my car looked amazing and my head was clear of the clutter of 2013. It was a great opportunity to reflect on where I’d been and I got clear on where I’m going!

The wrap up of 2013 was complete and the ramping up of 2014 is underway!
