Numbing Out the Pain

On this week’s Weight Loss Without the Scales call there was a lively discussion that covered a lot of ground – why we eat often mindlessly and even unaware that we are  doing it.

The concept of eating to numb out was discussed and it is a reality  (it’s called comfort eating).   Life happens and we need to deal with it.    Food is just one of the ways we deal with it, unsuccessfully and dysfunctionally, in a way that that we think has always worked (but has it really?).   Still, its all been  with the aim of trying to deal with it.

Wouldn’t it be great to have an intervention switch?!? I learned about Overeaters Anonymous a couple of weeks ago – who would have thought!   There are regular meetings everywhere. Distraction is another. Recognising when (or why) you’re in the biscuit barrel (or your equivalent) can be helpful.

And finally, compassion for yourself, maybe you do need to have some comfort, cry or sleep or walk – I have walked many hours of sadness out and sometimes I’ve had to walk a lot to get all that sadness (or anger) out. And then when it was out it I was done and life moved on.

Be gentle with you. It’s a journey. Keep travelling it.
